Since 1999, the Bridge Program at Antioch University Los Angeles (AULA) has been doing something simply revolutionary: providing college classes to low-income adults in Los Angeles, at NO cost to students. Bridge students earn up to 15 units of college credit while studying philosophy, literature, art history, and writing over a 9 month period, while studying the cultures, landscapes, and histories of LA neighborhoods. The cost of a college education has tripled over the past decade; Bridge provides more than access to what would otherwise be an expensive education, however. Our experience has shown that, when encouraged to read, analyze, and write about the humanities, Bridge students not only develop critical academic skills; they also expand in academic self-confidence, develop a greater sense of agency, and begin to affect change in their personal lives, careers, and communities. Often, this change is transformational.

The Story Project's project-based curriculum utilizes the storytelling arts in the classroom empowering youth, improving literacy while furthering self-esteem. Often taught by mentors from the professional entertainment community, our students create short films, plays, song lyrics, puppet shows, board games, murals, manga/comic books, poetry chap books, fables, photography projects and more, the only limitation is the student’s imagination. At the end of our 12 to 16 week semester, each of these class projects is then presented to the community in a “Premiere Night”, an evening that celebrates the arts and accomplishment. A national non-profit founded in 1998 in Los Angeles, today The Story Project extends from Culver City to Maryland and looks to empower more youth in more of America’s cities in the very near future.
It's The Story Project's goal to provide the tools necessary to every student's own, personal “Happily Ever After”. Write on! |
